Bon Appetit!

Oh the things I stumble upon on stumble.net:

Since we are on the subject of cooking (lol), I recently watched Julie & Julia, a super cute movie based on two true stories: one of Julia Child, a famous American chef of the 1960s, who made french cooking a whole lot easier for domesticated, American women, and Julie Powell, a woman who blogged her way through over 500 recipes in Julia Child's first cookbook called "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" within a year. Not only was Meryl Streep in the movie playing Julia Child, but the best thing about it was that the movie was inspirational.

While I was studying for my organic chemistry final and watching the movie on repeat for about three times, something caught my eye/ appetite every single time, it was a chocolate almond cake (lol). After realizing that I couldn't get that cake out of my mind, it was my mission to find the recipe and make that damn cake.

After taking my O-CHEM final, I had to bake!( That final stressed me out like no other.) I had no trouble finding the recipe; thanks to good old Oprah for having the recipe on her site. I still adore that woman although my godly perception of her was jaded after she told people on national television to tip servers only 10%. I'm a server, and a 10% tip is not cool, but let's not get into that.

The recipe can be found here: http://www.oprah.com/food/Chocolate-and-Almond-Cake

And look how my version of the cake turned out:
The verdict? Absolutely delicious! The cake came out a lot shorter than I expected it to be; I thought it would be at least 4 inches tall. Instead, it was around 2.5 inches. I used imitation rum instead of regular rum (Remember when using imitation rum that you should put in less than the recommended amount of rum. I put in 1 tablespoon of imitation rum rather than 2 tablespoons.) Also, I suggest putting in more almond extract because you can barely taste it in the cake; I would say 1.5 teaspoons. I absolutely adore the taste of almond extract in any kind of desert, so the more the merrier! The cake, itself, is very rich so you must have a slice with a large glass of milk :).

Also, upon watching Julie & Julia, it has inspired me to regulate my blog. Okay so I've been really bad at updating my blog, but I promise (especially to myself) that after I'm done applying to dental school within the next month that I will be updating it on a regular basis. On a good note, summer school is finally over for me, and now I can give my full undivided attention to studying for the DAT which is coming up on August 18th (Yikes!). The good thing is that since I took organic chemistry lab over the summer, I only need to brush upon some the reactions that we haven't fully covered for the organic chemistry portion of the DAT.

Oh and one more thing for you baking fanatics out there. I found this amazing website with a bunch of amazing recipes not too long ago. They have desert treats for practically every holiday imaginable. When I initially encountered it, I though I've died and gone to heaven. So when you get a chance, please check this site out: www.bakerella.com

As for now, ciao, and as Julia Child would say, "BON APPETIT!" (Yes..I am a big corn-ball)

Goodbye Ceramics

Sorry for being MIA for the past two months. I had been so busy with school and extracurriculars that it was ridiculous. These past few weeks, I've finally had some time to chill and relax. I just got back from Pensacola in Florida, and had the most amazing time hanging out with my friends on the beach.

I could pretty much wake up to this everyday.

The sun going down:

I finally finished my Lady Gaga necklaces and this is how one of them turned out:

Here are Henry and Chance modeling my necklaces...lol :

I love how the color of the letters turned out. As for the charms and the big beads, I had to spray paint them because gold glaze has been discontinued for a while due to lead content.

Here's another project that I used spray paint for:

And yes..it is a toilet. A toilet for baby royalty. The concept of the project was to make a functional chair, and the first thing that popped up in my mind was a toilet. I'm weird; I know, but my teacher dug the idea so I stuck to it.

While taking ceramics, my enemy was the kiln. Anytime I put anything in there, something would always go wrong whether it was the glaze color, cracks that appeared out of no where, etc. The toilet had to be the biggest challenge for me. Everything went wrong after it got put into the kiln, but I managed to salvage it by using a lot of putty and spray paint.

The good news is that I passed the class with an A, and the bad news is that this is my only/last ceramics class :(
Ceramics is definitely a fun class that does require a bit of work, but is fun nonetheless.  I see why dental schools recommend it to pre-dental students; it definitely tests your perceptual ability.

Happy hours

Spring break is finally here!
For me, this means studying, working on my ceramics project, laying by the pool, and squeezing many happy hours in between. I've been so busy with school lately that I really need this break to relax/de-stress and get back on the ball. With my Dental Admissions Test (DAT) coming up this July and graduation coming up in December, I am under major crunch time.

To start off spring break, my bestie and I went to Tsunami for a dinner date.
For those of you who may not know, Tsunami is a sushi restaurant in Baton Rouge located on the 6th floor of the downtown Shaw Center. It has a great atmosphere, food, and wasabi bloody marys (not to mention, delicious martinis as well). You also have a killer view of downtown Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River.

Getting ready to dig into pure yumminess.

Kind of blurry, but look how pretty. The Hawaiian rolls are to die for!

Beautiful night view of the Mississippi River.

Black lace tank: Express, black lace skirt: Urban outfitters, silver necklace: Express, heels: Guess, wristlet: Coach

As you can tell, I look a little too happy about drinking my bloody mary.

I love to wear black because it pretty much goes with anything, and it's never out of style. I absolutely love this lace skirt and the texture it has, although you can't really see it in this picture. (I promise to take better pictures next time!)
In order to add a splash of color, I wore Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Gloss in Cranberry Cocktail (not only is the color appealing, but so is the name) . Just cause I like to wear black doesn't mean I have to be a boring minimalist.
Accessories always add onto an outfit; it can either really make or break an outfit. Here, I wore a simple chain necklace to complement my outfit without overdoing it. Overall, simple meets simple in order to keep a balance.

Gaga for Inspiration

How hilarious is that?

I've been quite busy for the past few days catching up with school. I have so many things due next week and it's making me stress out a tad bit. I have 2 tests, 1 presentation, 3 lab reports, and a ceramics project due.
Talk about overload.

For my third ceramics project, I have decided to make a Lady Gaga inspired necklace. The objective of this project is to make a souvenir.  We are to make six souvenirs, so we can give them to the six people on each of our teams. Now the funny thing about this is that there are two boys in the entire class, and they happen to be on my team. Now, what are they going to do with these Lady Gaga necklaces? Hopefully, I'm thinking they will love it and decide to wear it at least once.

Why Lady Gaga? I love her crazy sense of fashion; she constantly amazes me with what she wears. I feel like she is one of the few people in our population that can pull off these looks. When I look at her, I feel so inspired to make something. I love the fact that it's her own style and she refuses to change it for anyone (especially with all the controversy she causes with what she wears) The origami-esque dress that she wore (to some event show) has to be one of my favorites.

Lady Gaga also happens to be on tour in Europe right now, so I felt that it would be most appropriate to make a souvenir dedicated to her.

For the charms, I am making a lightning bolt, a disco stick (microphone), a poker card, and a bow. Each of these items correlates to one of her smash hits, excluding the bow. Can you guess which songs?

The lightning bolt for "Just Dance".
The card for "Pokerface".
And the disco stick for "Love Game".
I really want to make a telephone for her current hit "Telephone", but I'm restricted in time :(

I have to turn this in by Monday afternoon. I still have to make a massive amount of beads and put the finishing touches on the charms. I guess this means I'll be living in the ceramics studio all weekend.

Wish me luck!

First Post :)

So this is my first blog post ever. How exciting is that? I'm actually quite excited because I've been wanting to start a blog for the longest time, but I never really knew what to write about nor did I have the time to (or so I thought).

I've always had many interests growing up. At a certain point in my late teenage years, I thought my interests would narrow down, but it really didn't. Although, one thing I noticed was that a lot of my interests were related to the subject of art whether it was watching plays, drawing, sculpting, taking pictures, dressing up, reading, knitting (yes, I LOVE to knit), cooking, singing, dancing, and so on. I don’t know if cooking would be seen as a form of art to some people, but I most certainly do. I mean, on how many occasions have people seen other people eat food that didn’t look good to eat? I surely never did unless there was some sort of Fear Factor deal going on. I also see cooking as a form of therapy. When I was in middle school, I was very sheltered and all I could do while I stayed home was cook which made me a happy Asian child. Cooking is something I thoroughly enjoy doing ,and I absolutely love cooking for my friends and family.

Nature has always struck me with its beauty. No matter where I am, I am constantly stunned by what I see outside. Being outside is something I always enjoyed whether it's a sunny, rainy, or windy day, although I must say, I enjoy the sunny weather the most. The cold weather and I do not mix very well together. This is precisely the reason why I cannot live up north even though I really would like to. My ultimate life long dream is to live on an island somewhere in the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean and sail on my sailboat to come back to the mainland. (Yeah, I know, I'm slightly weird).

As for my career choice, I decided a long time ago that I wanted to be a dentist. I love everything about the dentistry field: the people, good hours, and, of course, good pay. I feel that dentistry is a good combination of my love for art, science, and helping others. After being in college for almost four years, I am finally applying to dental school this summer and hopefully, if all goes well, I will get in.

With this blog, I hope to inspire others and bring more insightful ideas or thoughts upon myself. I want people to see the true beauty in everything regardless of how negative something may be. I will also post a hodgepodge of randomness because I get so easily entertained by the littlest things. So I hope you enjoy my blog and thanks for taking the time to read it :)

Oh and as for the title, "Life is FaBoosh." Faboosh is a term I came up with many years ago, not Perez Hilton. Faboosh means, to me, fabulous in a sense of all realms of life, whether it is scientifically, artistically, socially, etc. It truly defines the beauty of all things with a bit of sass and glamour.

So with all this being said, I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes that I firmly uphold by one of our founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin:

"Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about
what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight."
